Engineering Analysis

Engineering Analysis has been a key skill in order to ensure the viability and success of my design projects. This skill has been applicable in using softwares such as the Cambridge Engineering Selector, Solidworks Finite Element Analysis and Sustainability tools.

Sustainability Investigation

During my design project of a contemporary pedestal fan with a focus on sustainability, it was necessary to make use of tools contained within the Cambridge Engineering Selector and the Solidworks Sustaibability Tool. This helped me to make sustainable design choices, as well as decisions regarding shipping, target market and transportation. The pages below summarise these findings.

Finite Element Analysis

Finite Element Analysis allows for the testing and analysis of a variety of mechanical design parameters. Whilst designing a spill resistant camping mug in the in the example below, Solidworks finite element analysis was used to evaluate the resistance of the product in a drop test, identifying whether the design of the mug was structurally suitable to be used in a rugged environment.

Design Optimisation

The two examples below show examples of using engineering analysis to optimise part geometry to achieve a desire specification. The exhaust manifold utilised Solidworks modelling design studies to achieve equal tube lengths whilst keeping to minimum curvature and overall volume requirements. The wind chime in the other example utilised Solidworks design studies to optimise the length, diameter and bore size of a tube such that its resonant frequency when suspended by a string produces the note B in the 7th Octave.
