Prototyping
One of the most valuable skills in the design process is empathising with users. This can be achieved through a variety of methods, such as prototyping or empathy studies.
Rapid Prototyping
The examples below are samples of some work taken from a project designing a cordless power drill. The images show 3D printed models which were created iteratively to test the ergonomic suitability of the drill handle. Being able to rapidly test new iterations and considering which was most suitable, based off of feedback from other student, ensured the handle was as refined as possible.
High Fidelity Prototyping
Following on from the rapid prototyping of the cordless drill handle seen above, a high fidelity model was produced that includes a working spring loaded trigger, a removable battery with spring loaded release and rotating chuck and torque speed dials.
Empathy Study
Effectively using everyday household objects as prototypes, completing an empathy study during the design of a garlic press suitable for those with limited dexterity, was an extremely rewarding exercise. By taping finger joints, it is possible to simulate the limited motion and strength of the users. Interacting with different objects in this study investigated the viability of certain geometries, as well as better understanding user requirements.
